How to work as a nurse in the UAE
Which health authority licenses you (DHA, DOH or MOHAP), DataFlow checks, the licensing exam and your employment visa.
Last checked: 7 Oct 2026
In the UAE, the licence you need depends on where you will work:
| Emirate | Authority |
|---|---|
| Dubai | Dubai Health Authority (DHA) |
| Abu Dhabi, Al Ain | Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH) |
| Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah | Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) |
The steps
- Check you meet the requirements. Most authorities ask for a nursing degree or diploma and at least 2 years of recent experience.
- Apply online to the right authority and complete primary source verification through DataFlow. DataFlow contacts your school and employers directly.
- Pass the licensing exam. This is a computer-based exam booked through the authority.
- Get a job offer. Your licence is activated when an employer hires you.
- Your employer sponsors your employment visa and residence permit. Many also give housing or a housing allowance, flights and health insurance.
Good to know
- Your licence eligibility is usually valid for a limited time, so plan your job search after you pass the exam.
- A good standing certificate from your current regulator is often required.
Watch out: UAE labour law does not allow recruiters or employers to charge workers recruitment fees. If you are asked to pay for a visa or a job, say no.
