How to work as a nurse in New Zealand

Nursing Council registration, English requirements and a fast route to residence for registered nurses.

Last checked: 7 Oct 2026

New Zealand needs registered nurses and offers them a fast path to residence. You must be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ).

The steps

  1. Check your eligibility on the Nursing Council website and create an online account.
  2. Meet the English requirement with an accepted test such as IELTS Academic or OET.
  3. Complete the Council's steps for internationally qualified nurses. These usually include learning about New Zealand law and culture and a practical exam (OSCE) in New Zealand.
  4. Find a job with an accredited employer and apply for a work visa.
  5. Apply for residence. Registered nurses are on the Green List, which offers a quicker route to residence.

Good to know

  • Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora) is the largest employer of nurses.
  • Steps and fees are updated often. Always check the Council website first.

Watch out: Only licensed immigration advisers can charge for New Zealand visa advice. You can check their licence online.
